1. Bistrot des Ducs

Nestled between the Grand Théâtre on Place du Ralliement and Les 400 Coups cinema, Bistrot des Ducs is the epitome of a classic French restaurant serving traditional dishes.

Anthony takes care of front of house in the stylish black and white dining room whilst Kévin is in charge of the kitchen. The two friends put their own indulgent and hearty spin on the classics.

Their signature French starters include snails, foie gras and goat’s cheese salad. We recommend caquelon poached egg in a light Port and foie gras cream. Carnivores will love the steak in Anjou red wine and shallot sauce. It tastes good and is well-made.

The attention to detail at the end of your meal makes all the difference!

If you want an al fresco meal, ask for a table upstairs on the terrace to enjoy the warm Anjou weather.

2. Le Monument Café

Alexandre, Maxime, Romain and Ronan and their team would be delighted to welcome you to La Maison, an amazing renovated old house.

This warm and friendly concept has two terraces : one is on the Cale de la Savatte side and offers a breathtaking view of the Château d’Angers, the other on the Cathedral side and is perfect for relaxing with your feet in the grass.

The menu is full of delicious surprises! You’ll find platters to share and an elaborate seasonal menu. You’ll also find an extensive cocktail menu to enjoy with your meal.

3. Le Bistrot Les 3 lieux

You can’t say no to the bistro at Les 3 Lieux! The fantastic former fishing tackle factory in Les Ponts-de-Cé is home to La Nuit (hôtel), La Table (fine dining restaurant) and now Le Bistrot. There’s so much to explore at the multi-facetted bistro by the Loire.

In the morning, it’s a café where you can have breakfast in the dining room, terrace or lounge and soak up the great views of the Loire.

At lunchtime, it turns into a self-service canteen for a quick and tasty meal of simple well-made classics using fresh seasonal produce.

In the afternoon, you can settle in for an indulgent tea break then enjoy some live music with a glass of wine or cocktail made by the talented bar staff as the day winds down.

4. La Réserve

Kill two birds with one stone and head up to La Réserve’s rooftop terrace at Le Quai Theatre.

You get fantastic views of beautiful Angers in a peaceful location. It’s one of the best rooftops for watching the sun set over the Maine, château and Saint-Maurice Cathedral.

A highlight of Angers life!

The tapas menu and seasonal dishes go down a treat with your drink. Burrata in truffle oil with pesto rosso and bresaola slices, lightly-cooked duck in sesame with a honey and beetroot reduction and crunchy vegetables, seared scallops and razor clams with spelt risotto and saffron vinaigrette… Something to put a smile on the face of anyone who likes creative bistro cuisine.

5. l'Attilio - Château de Noirieux

This Relais & Châteaux establishment in Briollay lies in an awe-inspiring natural haven where you can experience something special near Angers.

Two 15th and 17th century castles are home to a fine dining restaurant and 19 rooms deep in a 9ha estate overlooking the Loir Valley.

6. L'Auberge de Chanteclair

Chic and stylish. Those are the two words that spring to mind when you step into L’Auberge Chanteclair.

The tables are carefully laid, the service is flawless and the food is memorable.

Settle down on the terrace or veranda, bask in views of the Maine and tuck into delicious fish in a rich beurre blanc sauce or one of chef Paul Péan’s delectable desserts.

7. Le Noë

What really sets Le Noë apart is its location: the fabulous setting on the Loire riverbanks in Bouchemaine!

You can’t go wrong here… The terrace is usually heaving whether you’re here at sunset for a cocktail in summer or on a Sunday afternoon after a riverside walk. Never mind! Order your drink and settle onto the lawn to watch the boats glide by.

The atmosphere is amazing and you can feast on regional dishes.

8. Le Héron Carré

It’s not been around that long but the guinguette on the Maine riverbanks has become a local institution in summer.

Locals come here to enjoy sun-kissed afternoons or soak up the sunset with views of the Maine River and château in the background.

Join family or friends on the sprawling terrace and lawn to listen to live music, chat, play a round of palet or Mölkky. The wooden bar and restaurant twinkles with fairy lights and serves drinks and light bites.

Perfect if you’re feeling a little peckish! Don’t forget Sunday brunch served 11am-3pm!

9. Mamie Fada

Mamie Fada (“barmy granny” in English) is no ordinary place. It’s an original and surprising place.

It’s a restaurant serving top-of-the range home-made cuisine using fresh local and in-season produce. The restaurant menu was composed by the Angevin Michelin-starred chef, Pascal Favre d’Anne.

Sip delicious cocktails while looking at the view of the Maine, the Château d’Angers and the Saint-Maurice Cathedral and discover the wine list.

Also, you can have brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

10. Le Gupta's

Gupta’s, housed in a private mansion made of slate and tufa stone, has a terrace with a breathtaking view of Château d’Angers.

Inside, have a look on the exceptional setting of Gupta’s, it’s well worth a look.

You can have breakfast, lunch or dinner with well-made traditional cuisine and come for a jazz concert at the piano-bar.

11. Le Belle rive

With a name that translates as “the beautiful riverbank”, you can safely assume that people come to this local institution for its incredible location.

Whatever the weather, the views of the Maine are simply jaw-dropping. It has a first floor terrace, French windows and a floral garden in spring that create a leafy haven surrounded by nature near the university hospital and city centre.

Settle into the garden terrace and watch the chefs work their magic through the French window. The original, hearty dishes are made and dressed with love and everything is cooked to perfection.

If you like flavour combinations then this is the place for you. The well-stocked wine cellar and impeccable attentive service round off the experience.

NB: the restaurant is available for private hire for functions and the chef provides cookery lessons!

12. La Cabane du Chat-qui-Pêche

This guinguette on the Mayenne riverbanks in Cantenay-Épinard is the perfect natural haven to spend quality time with friends or family when the sun decides to make an appearance.

Whether you want a quiet spot to read, a duck burger (!) and glass of rosé or a game of palet with the family, make a beeline for La Cabane! It serves first class dishes made using local ingredients. The menu puts a fresh twist on classics such as duck burger with comté, smoked bacon and onion chutney or zander fillet with red butter sauce. If you’re feeling a little peckish then treat yourself to a cheese and meat platter.

The bar also hosts concerts on Sunday afternoons if you need a music fix!

13. Barco Vino

This wine bar located Quai des Carmes in Angers well worth a look. It’s one of the most pleasant places in summer.

In winter, the cosy interior welcomes lovers of fine wines and top products. Here, you can find local references and wines from further afield.

You can taste charcuterie, cheese or vegetarian platters which are delicious !

14. Le Mail

Located just a stone’s throw from the Town Hall and the Congress Centre, dining on the terrace of this restaurant is a real treat, set in the magnificent setting of the Jardin du Mail.

This bistronomic restaurant offers a quiet atmosphere and meticulous decor, with carefully prepared dishes and exquisite desserts.

Good to know: the terrace under the trees is ideal on a hot summer afternoon.
