The different areas of Angers Castle

Although it’s more discreet today at the back of the monument, the Porte des Champs was the main entrance to Château d’Angers in the Middle Ages. A strategic military point, source of passage and so potentially of danger!

For great ills, wonderful remedies, with the construction of two portcullises, including theoldest in France dated so far.

Château d’Angers’ inner courtyard is divided into two visitable areas: on one side, the seigniorial courtyard, also called the Haute-Cour with the royal residence, Saint-Jean-Baptiste chapel as well as the gatehouse. On the other, the Basse-Cour, comprising the Governor’s residence and the garrison courtyard.

In this museum space, you’ll find the monumental Tapestry of the Apocalypse, the first medieval comic strip. Its extraordinary dimensions (103 metres long by 4.5 metres high), its record long life (600 years) and the incredible finesse of its creation make it a unique piece.
