To the west of Angers, on the banks of the Loire, are a series of vineyards that produce some of the finest appellations in the Loire Valley. These are the Savennières, first produced by monks in the 11th century who recognised the distinctive flavour that could be produced by planting vines on the sandstone and shale south-facing slopes of the great river. Today, the monks have disappeared, replaced by viticulteurs with names you will probably recognise. Amongst them is Domaine Taillandier....
